When I use a joke or other story to reinforce a point I usually try to make the point - perhaps as a quote from another authority or in the form of a proverb or aphorism. I then summarise the point that I am going to make, and only then do I tell the story or the joke.
After the story, I explain the point that I am trying to make and them conclude with a brief call to action or other means of making the point memorable.
It's humour, not comedy
People come to hear a comedian, expecting to laugh, while those same people will probably be expecting a message from your presentation, and any laughter is a bonus.
The reason speakers use comedy is to make a point more memorable.
You entertain the audience, but at the same time do what you planned to do - inform, inspire or motivate.
